It is made from <\/span><i>ca\u00f1a flecha<\/i> (arrow cane), a tall grass that grows on the Caribbean coast. Artisans transform pieces of cane into black and white strips, which are then braided to create different geometric patterns.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0a1766;\">History<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sombreros vueltiaos come from the Caribbean region in the north of the country where the Indigenous Zen\u00fa live. These hats have been produced for hundreds of years, renowned for their combination of ample sun protection and intricate designs. Because each hat is made by hand, the finest ones can take a month to finish.<\/p>\n<p>The name\u00a0<em>vueltiao<\/em> comes from the Spanish word <em>vuelta<\/em>, which means \u201cturn.\u201d The artisans make many turns as they assemble the hat in concentric circles.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0a1766;\">Hair Flair<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A sombrero vueltiao\u2019s quality comes from its pattern and flexibility. A hat\u2019s pattern is determined by how many colored strands it has. The greater the number of strands, the more complex, time-consuming, and valuable the end result. A sombrero vueltiao must also be flexible enough to be carried in the wearer\u2019s pocket and emerge unharmed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8029 alignleft size-medium\" style=\"padding-right: 20px; padding-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"https:\/\/mathkind.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Colombia-sombrero-musician-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" \/>Sombreros vueltiaos have even been to the Olympics! During the 2004 opening ceremony in Athens, Greece, Colombian athletes marched proudly with black-and-white masterpieces covering their heads.<\/p>\n<p>Sombreros vueltiaos have also made their way into the country\u2019s folk music through the cumbia and vallenato traditions.
