Teaching antiracist math begins with conversations<\/span><\/h2>\n

In 2020 Mathkind created the Math 4 Antiracism series in response to the global uprisings sparked by the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmed Arbery, among others. We invited math educators from our network to discuss how social justice and antiracism show up in math education.<\/p>\n

Through this process, we began to reflect on how and where antiracism exists in our flagship programs. We continue to explore and push further how we embed these values into our everyday work.<\/p>\n

The Problem<\/span><\/h1>\n

As a mathematics education community, we want to bring attention and meaningful action to systemic inequities caused by long-standing racial oppression<\/span>.<\/span><\/i> All injustices, from climate change to income inequality to LGBTQ+ oppression, are exacerbated by racism. It\u2019s not enough to simply denounce white supremacy and privilege, we must work actively to dismantle it.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Challenge<\/span><\/h1>\n

We believe the biggest challenge facing the world right now is one of problem solving. We need to focus on the problem and our connections to it as well as to each other. Math 4 Antiracism<\/em> will allow us to unite as a global movement to fight social injustice. There is no time to lose.<\/span><\/p>\n

Math class is where students develop the critical thinking needed to challenge unjust systems in their own lives and communities.
